January 17: From The Couch

Dare you to move.

Great song eh? But we both know those four words have a lot more significance to us than just another great hit by Switchfoot. At the Christmas service we were all dared to make a move for God. But how are we supposed to know what that move is? How do we know what God is ‘daring’ us to do? In the drama, Mary was dared to carry a baby and bring God into this world, but for some reason I really don’t think God is daring the rest of us to do the same.

I left the youtheventz service this Christmas feeling pumped about making a huge move for God, but I spent the next several days being a couch potato waiting anxiously for my move to just ‘happen’. When nothing did happen, I was rather disappointed!

So I looked back on the past few days and realised maybe I wasn’t going about this the right way. Is it possible that I actually have to DO something in order to make a move for God?

Ever since I became a Christian there have been points in my walk of faith where I have felt very close to God, points where I felt like God was using me and I was fulfilling God’s will. But these times were often separated by times where I felt stagnant in my relationship with Christ, and not close to God at all. The only thing I could find in common about all the times that I felt close to God was that it was during those times that I took time each day to spend with Christ. Time to be alone with God, pray, and read scripture.

It may not seem like a huge move, but I think the first step in making our move includes spending time with God. After all, Jesus came down from heaven to be with us, so shouldn’t we make an effort to take time to be with our Saviour? In fact, in the drama it was only AFTER Mary took time to pray to God that an angel came down to tell her what God wants for her.

“Lord, I am ready to make a move for You. I pray that You would help me to find time each day to spend with You so that You can be the main focus in all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
